So its been a long weekend and I am thankful for it. We went to Essex to see my mother in law.   Over the Easter weekend, we went to  Southend-On-Sea.  We have been there many times.  See here for pictures from the archives .   This time though, I had an ulterior motive for going into the town.  First  we walked along the seafront and spent some £ in the amusement arcades.  I kept putting in 2p into the slot to win a Mamushka/Babushka Russian Doll key ring, but failed. As I was walking away a little disappointed like a sulking child, a woman ran up behind me calling me.  I turned around I thought I had dropped something.  Her son was on the machine next to us, he wanted a eraser aka rubber, but got a Russian Doll keyring (she obviously had overheard me talking to D about me trying to get this keyring).  I was totally blown away by her and her son's sweet kindness.  We were actually able to swap as my sister in law had got ...

Some of you may remember in September I went away for a short break with D.  We decided not to go overseas this year and instead enjoy what Great Britain had to offer.  Early on in the year we went to Cornwall, this time it was places like as Rye , Eastbourne, Hastings and Derek Jarman's Garden in Dungerness . One of the other places we visited was Brighton. D had been there before in his youth, but I was a Brighton virgin,  and was super excited about this part of our holiday trip the most. Yesterday I shared photographs mostly around Brighton Pier. Today it is the grand and iconic Brighton Royal Pavilion.   In my youth I became an accidental student of hidden black and visible minority histories and was fascinated by images of this 'exotic' building in the centre of Brighton and its outward Islamic Moorish visual style of minarets and domes.  Its was the most mosque like building I had seen in the UK and I wanted to see it in person and know more about it.   So that was another reason for our cultural break in Brighton. The inside is very different from the outside which is more 'Indian' in style, whereas the inside is more Oriental in style. We didn't get to enjoy the inside at a pleasurable pace as we got stuck behind a very large group of overseas students, so it felt like we were forced to be on a treadmill.  I would like to go back to Brighton for many reasons, but I would also like to see the Royal Pavilion at Night. After the Royal Pavilion, we went into  Brighton's Museum &  Art Gallery .  Its been a while since I went to a museum and art gallery.  The last time was in Glasgows Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery and it was  free to the public .  This one in Brighton cost us, but it included entry to the Royal Pavilion (click here if you missed my blog post).   I wanted to share this post for another reason, October is Black History Month in the UK and some of the collections at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery were very though provoking and enlightening.
